Everything you need to know about preparing your startup pitch deck.
How many slides should my pitch deck have?
The industry standard is between 10 and 15 slides. Investors have short attention spans and typically spend less than 4 minutes on a first-pass review. If you can’t explain your business in 12 slides, the business model may be too complex.
Should I send my pitch deck as a PDF or a link?
Always send a PDF or a secure tracking link (like DocSend). Never send a PowerPoint or Keynote file, as fonts and formatting often break on different devices. A PDF ensures your design looks exactly how you intended.
What is the single most important slide in the deck?
The ‘Problem’ slide is the most critical. If you don’t convince the investor that a massive, painful problem exists, they won’t care about your solution. You must make them feel the ‘pain’ before you show them the ‘medicine’.
Do these templates work for pre-seed vs. Series A?
Yes, but focus shifts. Pre-Seed decks should focus heavily on the Team and the Vision, while Series A decks must focus on Traction, Revenue Growth, and scalable Unit Economics.
Should I include my financial projections?
Yes, but keep them high-level. Include a 3-year summary showing projected revenue, expenses, and headcount. Save detailed spreadsheets for the ‘Due Diligence’ phase.
Do I need a different deck for ‘sending’ vs. ‘presenting’?
Ideally, yes. A ‘Leave-behind’ deck (emailed) should have enough text to be understood alone. A ‘Presentation’ deck should be visual-heavy with minimal text so the audience listens to you.
Is it okay to use a template, or will investors notice?
Investors care about clarity, not if you designed it from scratch. Using a proven structure helps investors find information quickly. The goal of a template is to provide the ‘skeleton’.
How much of my ‘Secret Sauce’ should I reveal?
Give enough info to prove a competitive advantage (a ‘Moat’), but avoid revealing deep trade secrets or proprietary code in a first-pass deck. Your goal is to get the meeting.
